AWS Activate Founders: credits for bootstrapped startups
AWS Activate Founders is the entry tier of the AWS startup credit program. It is built for startups that pay their own way and have no investor or accelerator behind them yet. The amount is small, the bar is low, and it does not stop you from getting a larger package later.
In short
- Founders gives $1,000 in AWS credits to self-funded startups. AWS says select startups may qualify for up to $5,000 over time.
- You need a company founded in the last 10 years, a working website and no earlier Activate credits. You do not need an investor.
- AWS says a decision takes about 7 to 10 business days.
- The credits pay for Claude when it runs through Amazon Bedrock. They do not pay for usage billed by Anthropic.
- Taking Founders does not block Portfolio. If you qualify for more later, AWS grants the difference.
What AWS Activate Founders gives you
$1,000 in AWS credits. AWS says select startups may qualify for up to $5,000 over time. AWS decides the amount, and approval is not automatic.
The credits work on more than 200 AWS services: compute, databases, storage, networking, and third-party AI models on Amazon Bedrock. AWS names Anthropic among the model providers the credits cover.
Who qualifies for AWS Activate Founders
| Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Self-funded | No institutional funding: no venture fund, accelerator or incubator investment. |
| New to Activate credits | The company has not received AWS Activate credits before. |
| Founded in the last 10 years | Counted from the company’s founding date. |
| A fully functioning website | A real site that says what the product does. A placeholder page is not enough. |
| An AWS account on a paid plan | Linked to your AWS Builder ID and verified. Credits are applied to it. |
| A company email address | On the same domain as your website. |
If you have an investor or went through an accelerator, look at Portfolio first. It asks for more, and it gives up to 200 times as much.
How to apply for AWS Activate Founders

- Create an AWS Builder ID
It is a personal sign-in for AWS programs. Confirm your email address.
- Complete your AWS Activate profile
Company name, website, country and your role.
- Choose the tier
Founders if you are self-funded. Portfolio if you hold an Organization ID, which you enter at this step.
- Describe your startup
What the product does, and your funding stage.
- Link and verify your AWS account
The account must be on a paid plan. Credits are applied to this account.
- Review and submit
From your own account. Nobody else can submit it for you.
How long approval takes and how credits arrive
AWS says a decision takes about 7 to 10 business days. Approved credits appear in the Billing console 3 to 4 hours after approval.
- Credits apply automatically to new charges on eligible services, before AWS charges your card. You cannot choose which service they go to.
- They do not cover past bills. Usage from before the credits arrived stays on your invoice.
- They usually expire within one to two years, depending on the package.
- A few services are excluded, among them Amazon Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, AWS Professional Services and AWS Training and Certification.
- You can check what is left at any time in the AWS console under Billing, then Credits.
Using Founders credits for Claude
AWS credits reduce your AWS invoice. So they pay for Claude only when your requests go through Amazon Bedrock. Requests sent to the Anthropic API are billed by Anthropic and are not covered.

Moving a workload to Bedrock changes the client, the login and the model ID. It also removes a few features, such as structured outputs and the Message Batches API, so check your workload before you move it.
Founders or Portfolio?
| Activate Founders | Activate Portfolio | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | $1,000, up to $5,000 for select startups | Up to $200,000 |
| Funding | Self-funded | Backed by an Activate Provider, pre-Series B |
| Organization ID | Not needed | Required, from your provider |
| Previous credits | None | Less than you are asking for now |
| Decision time | About 7 to 10 business days | About 7 to 10 business days |
You do not have to choose forever. AWS lets you apply again when your situation changes, and grants the difference up to the larger package.
Why Founders applications stall
- A personal email address, such as Gmail, in place of one on the company domain.
- A website that is a placeholder or does not describe the product.
- An AWS account that is on the free plan or has not been verified.
- Institutional funding. That makes it a Portfolio application.
- Activate credits received in the past.
